Summary

After a successful debut in April, the theatrical and absurd comedy returns to Alabama.

Over a ridiculous, hilarious, and cathartic hour performance, real issues fielded from the audience will be highlighted as the performers do their best to navigate jeers, boos, and applause as they attempt to toe-the-line that Everything is Great!

This performance is part of a Laughing Impact event, and along with the performance, the pre and post show hours feature grassroots organizations and community groups tabling, greeting, and answering attendee questions.

Everything Is Great! A Town Hall for the People: Comedy / Theatre / Politics

Real issues and questions are fielded by comedians playing the roles of wanna-be elected officials, as issues raised by the audience are performed by another set of players, in this improvised and satirical reimagining of a TOWN HALL!

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Comedians return to Alabama this summer with a sharp, satirical twist on civic engagement in Everything Is Great! A Town Hall for the People, a hilarious reimagining of the traditional town hall format. Taking place July 30 at Saturn in Birmingham’s Avondale neighborhood, the one-night-only performance offers audiences a uniquely absurd — and cathartic — comedy experience grounded in real issues and community connection.

Created by Alabama native and internationally touring comedian Matt Davis, the show parodies the dysfunction and spectacle of modern politics. Comedians portray fictional elected officials in a civic-style improv show where audience members submit real concerns. Those issues are then dramatized, distorted, and debated through wild character responses, fictional sponsorships, performative bureaucracy, and chaotic dark-money competitions.

Over the course of the hour-long performance, audience jeers, applause, and laughter fuel a deliberately absurd civic circus. Two teams of performers respond to public questions — one set portraying the people, the other parodying power — turning real frustrations into improvised theater that’s part political roast, part game show, and fully unhinged civic spectacle.

The performance is part of a Laughing Impact event and includes pre- and post-show participation by local grassroots and community organizations. Attendees will have opportunities to connect with these groups, ask questions, and explore local initiatives and causes.

Everything Is Great! has its roots in the same interactive and festival-ready formats Davis has developed in past Fringe performances. With a blend of improvisation, political parody, and live audience interaction, the show provides both a much-needed laugh and a thoughtful — if hilarious — reflection on the relationship between elected officials and the people they claim to represent.

Audiences can expect surprise guests, comedic chaos, and a release valve for the frustrations many feel in the current political climate. It’s comedy with purpose, theatre with bite, and politics with a punchline.

Matt Davis (Birmingham, Alabama native) is an award-winning comedian with a long C.V. of global comedy and arts festivals and 25+ years of touring across hundreds of cities through 70+ countries. Some notable festivals include runs of shows at Just For Laughs in Montreal (largest North American comedy festival), Sketch Fest in San Francisco, UICF in Utrecht, Netherlands, the Bengaluru Comedy Festival in India, Sydney Comedy Fringe in Australia, HICF in Hong Kong, and many, many, more. In 2015 his World In Jest project helped to connect disparate emerging comedy scenes, including many where he was the first foreign artist to perform with local scenes (Mongolia, Macedonia, Pakistan, and Bosnia-Herzegovina to name a few). This work led to his previous hour, BadFamiliar, and an on-going effort of the same name that hopes to help connect artists interested in crushing the notion that “familiar equals good” within their own work. Matt’s early years of touring (mid-late 90s to 2015), were primarily in North America. During this time he was racking up 40 weeks a year on the road; toured as a support act for household names; was featured on Netflix in its early days; released 5 albums he does not care for now; and was regularly spun on Sirius / XM Radio.
