The Student PIRGs are a network of student-run nonprofit groups on campuses across the country that empower students to take on pressing societal issues. For nearly 50 years, Student PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) have organized campaigns on things like environmental protection, voter turnout, and college affordability. Each affiliated campus chapter gives students hands-on experience in advocacy – from running petition drives to lobbying officials. They also sponsor town hall meetings and panel discussions with lawmakers and experts on topics important to young people (for example, campus climate action or reducing textbook costs). Nonpartisan but decidedly progressive in ethos, the Student PIRGs train hundreds of student leaders annually in effective communication and organizing. Many victories, such as open textbook programs and plastic-free campus policies, started with PIRG students educating their peers and building broad support through public forums.
